Peterborough Poet Laureate 2012

As part of the successful We Love Words Festival, Simon Stabler was chosen as the new Peterborough Poet Laureate. His poem ‘ This is Peterborough …. and we deserve more‘ and his reasons for applying were judged to be the best by a panel led by former poet laureate Sir Andrew Motion. Motion said that he thought Simon brought ‘freshness, integrity and passion to poetry which would work well on the local and national stage’.

Simon was thrilled yet overwhelmed by winning and he is looking forward to working with The John Clare Cottage, Vivacity and Libraries and Schools of Peterborough during 2012/13. We look forward to hearing more of his thought provoking work.

This is Peterborough…and we deserve more

I make no apologies for where I’m from
This is the place where I belong
It doesn’t have the cachet of Paris or Rome
But this is the place that I call home
And we could be leaders in Europe
If the City Council didn’t screw it all up
A curse on Cereste, another on Peach
They promised us the future, then put it out of reach
They told us these fountains would keep us afloat
It would’ve been nice to have been given a vote
Council decisions send me berserk
The cabinet system just doesn’t work
We have a cathedral, what else have we got?
Too many centres full of empty shops
I don’t want to take over but once you know all the facts
Will you join me in the big fight back?
