The Majical World of John Clare

By Marianna Kneller

In his Journal of 1825 John Clare wrote that reading his favourite poets was like 'meeting green spots in deserts'. In this book the artist, Marianna Kneller, creates her own oasis, 'a place of calm, rest and replenishment', as she joins with her favourite poet, John Clare.

The book is a selection of John Clare's writings from his unique observation of of rural life: "The Shepherds Calendar", his Journal 1824-5 and Poems, Sonnets, Essays and Letters chosen to illustrate the rhythm of the passing year, showing his love for all living things.

For each month, there is a selection of texts from Clare, together with Marianna's evocative natural scenes and beautifully detailed botanical illustrations to create a majical world of the passing year, chronicling its changing moods and colours through the seasons.

Marianna Kneller, FSBA is a Botanical Illustrator and Flower Painter and a Founder Member of the Society of Botanical Artists.
